Sebastian Hosu: This Space Between Us

As soon as a stable identity, structure or boundary dissolves, space is created for something else. In art, the dissolution can be the blurring, the fading, the merging of the figure with its surroundings. Sebastian Hosu's figures dissociate in colour and brushstroke, and it is precisely in this dissociation that they begin to become part of something else: the forest, the air, the moment, the colouring. The human form, which was once stable, is now porous. What is lost in definition is gained in connectivity: Fusion, transformation and movement merge into a harmonious contingency. In the paintings, the protagonists do not exist in isolation.Instead, they are often caught in motion, partially obscured or absorbed by their
surroundings. Painted gesturally and fluidly, the impression is created that the figures are not fixed entities, but changing forms that are in a state of transition. In its emotionality and driven nature, it is almost as if the act of painting becomes a catalyser in Hosu's work.

Sebastian Hosu's figurative compositions and their abstract forms combine technical skill, decisiveness and intuition at just a decisive, at just the right moment. The depictions of human bodies embedded in landscapes appears sometimes more concrete, sometimes more abstract. In this way, occasionally they can be rather sensed and 'felt' than clearly recognized. It is a “border area of the representable” (Kito Nedo) through which Sebastian Hosu allows us to immerse ourselves in his pictorial situations and painterly moments. One might say, the beauty of his painterly gestures creates the impression of a painterly-performative form of remembering - or re-experiencing - of fleeting moments; moments that take shape in his paintings in an exciting and dynamic way.
